In addition, some of our guest workers may live and work in the grey area that can slide over into enslavement. Withholding passports, the application of force and coercion, including sexual assault, all point to cases meeting the criteria of slavery. But with minimal training and with little legislation in the area, cases are rarely recognised as such. And, of course, there is the slavery far away that reaches Guernsey through the things we buy, eat, and wear. Electronics, clothing, foodstuffs, and many other goods are produced by slavery and need our attention and action to reduce demand for these tainted products.
The situation is far from grim, however, our close-knit community, our lack of corruption and solid law enforcement, means that with some attention and action we will be able to say with certainty that slavery does not happen on the island. Come along to increase your understanding of what slavery is, and what it may look like in this small community, how the island can tackle the issue and what we can all do to combat slavery worldwide.
The workshop will take the form of a case-study and discussion led by Kevin Bales, Professor of Contemporary Slavery at the University of Nottingham, with contributions from Adrian Hale, head of AML/CFT Policy and Compliance for the Financial Intelligence Service and who has 29 years service at Guernsey Border Agency.

In today’s society we all stand up and say we want everyone to succeed, we want everyone to reach their dream but how can we when half of us are being held back. I believe we should all be involved in the conversation and the only way to do that is by having equal opportunity, equal rights and over all having equality.

James Partridge
James Partridge
James says “I’m delighted to be invited to be an Ambassador of Equality Guernsey because this is the right time for the island to recognise how fundamental human rights and equality are for all of us and to act accordingly.”

Paul Chambers

Working with vulnerable people has been a fundamental aspect of Paul’s work over the past 20 years. In all of his roles he has never been afraid to influence policy and practical change so that the voices of those who have no voice at all can be heard. “The best way to tackle any problem is at its source, treating causes rather than symptoms. It saves people from suffering the same problems over and over again”.

Jayne Ozanne

“As a Christian I believe that we are each uniquely created and equally loved by a God who calls us to be ambassadors of the same. Our society is therefore always far stronger when we embrace and celebrate our differences whilst treating each other with mutual love and understanding. I am thrilled to be part of the Equality Guernsey Campaign as I know that the island has always been a steadfast rock that offers a place of refuge to all. I am looking forward to “coming home” in July to participate in the EGC conference so that we can explore this together further.”

We all have an identity that means that we may be treated differently for some reason – whether we realise that or not. And we have a moral duty to protect people who are more vulnerable than ourselves from discrimination. And, thats why I (and Liberate) are involved in the EWG.
Personally I would love to see people changing their views and perception towards LGBTQ+ people, in particular for people to take the time to understand the Trans community more. It would be an amazing achievement if we could all be more accepting of people who are different to ourselves and we can only do this by listening to each other and engaging with each other.
Liberate support the LGBTQ+ community, their family and friends, we campaign to to update laws to be LGBTQ inclusive, we inform people of LGBTQ+ issues, and hold inclusive events to create an open dialogue with regards to these issues.
