Take a closer look at actual discrimination in Guernsey, a review of the big issues of 2018 in the Citizens Advice Bureau Report, and an opportunity to discuss how we make a difference as individuals and organisations.

The everyday emotional and social challenges of coming to terms with and eventually living well with a disability from any cause can take years to resolve — and arguably it does not get the attention it deserves from the health and social care system. This workshop will explore the range of difficulties, the common psychological reactions to adversity and how you and your family/carers can gain more control and find positive ways of coping and resilience.

James Partridge, Face Equality International

Follow the journey of a public sector organisation in their quest for greater equality in the workplace and learn more about the DIFERA toolkit and how it can support you to develop your own organisation.

Vic Tanner Davy, Liberate Jersey
Lorraine Barker, GCFE

Though we may assume that it “can’t happen here” – forms of slavery has been found in every country. Whilst we do not say that it is a numerous or severe problem in Guernsey, we cannot say that it is not happening.

In addition, some of our guest workers may live and work in the grey area that can slide over into enslavement. Withholding passports, the application of force and coercion, including sexual assault, all point to cases meeting the criteria of slavery. But with minimal training and with little legislation in the area, cases are rarely recognised as such. And, of course, there is the slavery far away that reaches Guernsey through the things we buy, eat, and wear. Electronics, clothing, foodstuffs, and many other goods are produced by slavery and need our attention and action to reduce demand for these tainted products.

The situation is far from grim, however, our close-knit community, our lack of corruption and solid law enforcement, means that with some attention and action we will be able to say with certainty that slavery does not happen on the island. Come along to increase your understanding of what slavery is, and what it may look like in this small community, how the island can tackle the issue and what we can all do to combat slavery worldwide.
The workshop will take the form of a case-study and discussion led by Kevin Bales, Professor of Contemporary Slavery at the University of Nottingham, with contributions from Adrian Hale, head of AML/CFT Policy and Compliance for the Financial Intelligence Service and who has 29 years service at Guernsey Border Agency.

One of the barriers to dealing with matters of equality has been the strongly held religious beliefs that some hold.  This raises complex questions regarding how best to safeguard those caught in areas of intersectionality, such as with faith and sexuality, and the rights of some to hold views that can be extremely harmful to others, and which discriminate against them.  This workshop will look at how we might tackle this issue, and share some of the safeguarding concerns of those most at risk.

Jayne Ozanne, Ozanne Foundation

In this interactive workshop, Sarah Boddey, Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer at Northern Trust will help participants explore when, where and how gender bias (both male and female) occurs in the workplace and what can be done to recognise and mitigate those biases.  Through exploring everyday work scenarios, she will highlight the six main types of bias that are most likely to be seen at work, why they occur and what to do about them.
A review of the 2018 wellbeing survey data and an exploration of the current practice in providing equal access to health care for all.

Dr Nicky Brink
